Illinois bans credit cards for sports betting

The Illinois Gaming Board has approved a new rule that would ban the use of credit cards for funding sports betting accounts.  To encourage more responsible gambling and protect those at risk of falling into unhealthy habits.

Marcus Fruchter, head of the Illinois Gaming Board, explained that this move is supported by solid research. Studies show that people who struggle with problem gambling are more likely to use credit cards to place bets, taking up debt they can’t afford. By cutting off that option, the Board hopes to help bettors stay within their limits.

Illinois will not completely ban digital payments

The new rule is not going to completely ban digital payments for sports betting. According to another rule, casino visitors can use digital wallets for placing bets, withdrawing winnings, and managing their funds, without the option to link credit cards. These wallets will still follow strict rules, including ID checks, age restrictions, and anti-money laundering measures.

The Gaming Board also introduced updated record-keeping standards for video gaming sales agents to improve transparency across the industry.

These changes are part of Illinois’s continued effort to keep up with the ever-changing gaming landscape. While the Board has approved the updates, public feedback is still open for the next 45 days. The next review of the rule is set for June.
