Indian authorities block users’ access to Polymarket
The government of India has introduced new restrictive measures against prediction markets by blocking local users’ access to Polymarket’s website.
The decision to impose a block on the website came after India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) warned VPN providers over prediction market access, stressing that players were still able to participate in event trading despite clear bans on the platforms. VPNs were ordered to prohibit users from accessing any prediction market website, with Polymarket flagged to face enforcement action.
After the website blocking, Polymarket’s online platform now displays “This site can’t be reached. Check if there is a typo in polymarket.com.” as a message for Indian users.
Additionally, domestic media have been reporting that, according to unnamed sources, the MeitY is also in the process of blocking Kalshi by May 29, 2026.
In the United States, prediction markets are regulated by the CFTC and are treated as exchanges at the federal level; however, like many other governments, India also classifies prediction markets as online money gaming, which is directly banned in the country under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025.
