India’s real-money gaming ban delayed to January 2026
Despite arguments for early consideration, India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant has deferred the hearing on challenging the new ban on real-money gaming to January 2026.
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA) was passed in August 2025 and banned all real-money gaming (RMG) platforms in India. Regulators believe the unchecked expansion of RMG led to financial fraud and money laundering and called the sector a “masquerade in the shadows of legal ambiguity”.
PROGA has prohibited operators from offering any type of money-based game, including games of chance and fantasy sports.
Critics argue that the ban has had a negative influence, as reports show that it has pushed players to illegal offshore platforms. It was indicated that before the ban, only 3.4% of users spent time on offshore platforms; however, the numbers grew to 44% after the ban.
The report wrote:
“This rise in repetitive, high-frequency play aligns with the findings that offshore platforms are perceived as very easy to use for deposits and withdrawals. 93.7% rated the process as easy or very easy, making it simple for players to re-enter games multiple times a day.”
Additionally, RMG platforms reported $840 million in asset write-downs, and 7,000 Indians lost their jobs.
