Irving residents push back against proposed casino project

In Irving, Texas, a large group of local residents is pushing back against Las Vegas Sands Corp.’s casino proposal with a petition signed by 3000 people.
For a long time, LVS has considered Texas as the best location and has planned to redevelop a 259-acre site near the old Texas Stadium. The proposed resort would feature a casino, hotel, convention center, and retail spaces with a 15,000-seat arena for the Dallas Mavericks.
However, local resistance against the resort is strong. At a recent public meeting, hundreds of residents gathered to voice their concerns, holding up signs that said, “No Casino in Irving.”
The petition, created by resident Irving Droughton, argues that a casino could have a negative impact on the community’s safety and stability. Instead, Droughton believes that Irving should invest in developments like small businesses, parks, and family-friendly attractions.
While the opposition is loud, another petition supporting the project has started with way fewer signatures.
The city’s planning and zoning commission is scheduled to vote soon, and if the proposal moves forward, it will be passed to the city council. For casinos to become legal in Texas, the state would make constitutional changes.
