Gavin Fineff, who is now serving a nine-year sentence, has filed complaints against Entain, Tabcorp, and Sportsbet, arguing that the operators enabled his large-scale gambling.

Fineff was jailed for defrauding 12 victims of more than $3 million but is now arguing that the Australian operators encouraged his betting and didn’t investigate whether his funds were unlawful.

He has filed legal claims against 2 VIP managers as well, mentioning they persuaded him to reopen accounts and ignored his problem gambling behavior.

If the lawsuit is won, the compensation is to go directly to the victims, not to Fineff.

Attorney Geoffrey Watson, who is the advisor to Fineff’s legal team, called the case potentially transformative for Australia’s gambling sector, as he believes operators knew about Fineff’s vulnerability but allowed him to gamble, which could cause liability for damages.

On the other side, victims still feel resentful towards the issue. For instance, Sharon Williams’ mother suffered losses in the case. She commented, saying the legal action cannot reverse the harm, and the case is just about trying to shift the blame.

Fineff will be eligible for parole in February 2028. In a recent interview from prison, he urged the Australian government to strengthen gambling regulations and conduct industry reforms.
