Kalshi exits India after prediction markets ban
According to Kalshi’s member agreement updated on June 17, 2026, the operator added India to its list of restricted jurisdictions and blocked local users’ access to event trading after the country moved to ban prediction markets.
Kalshi’s decision follows the establishment of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act in India, which became effective on May 1, 2026, banning online money games and prediction markets. Even before the implementation of the law, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had already targeted Kalshi by sending a warning letter to stop operations on April 25, 2026.
Despite the government’s orders, Kalshi continued accepting Indian users until the middle of May 2026, although reports show that the platform became inaccessible through different internet providers in the country from the last week of May. This came as a result of India warning VPN providers over prediction market access.
Previously, the prediction market operator had announced its international expansion plan of entering more than 140 countries; however, Kalshi’s exit from India shows a move away from the expansion push. The platform currently restricts 55 countries and regions in total.
In addition to Kalshi, India had also launched enforcement action against Polymarket, as authorities blocked the platform in late May 2026.
