KSA announces the Dutch black market’s dominance

A new report from the Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) shows that the black market keeps dominating the Netherlands with its spendings.

On October 10, Kansspelautoriteit, simply known as KSA, submitted a report revealing that the gambling channelization in the Netherlands is 87%, significantly lower than the estimated 95%.

This means that the gambling revenues from the black market were forecasted to be only 5%. However, 5% doesn’t mean that the market remains behind with its spendings. On the contrary, the black market surpasses the regulated market.

This may be a result of the country’s new law from October 1, 2024, imposing a monthly deposit limit of €700, which is equal to $766. This law was aimed at promoting responsible gaming; however, it motivated gamblers to turn to the black market, which has no strict rules.

VNLOK (Vereniging van Nederlandse Online Kanspelaanbieders) and NOGA (Nederlandse Online Gambling Associatie), two associations in the Netherlands that represent online gambling operators, believe that it is essential for operators to conduct follow-up conversations with players who have self-excluded, helping them to manage their gambling behavior effectively.

VNLOK Chairman Helma Lodders and NOGA Director Eric Konings were concerned about vulnerable groups, including problem gamblers and young adults.

Helma Lodders and Eric Konings stated:

“These groups are now in danger of disappearing into statistics when they deserve extra protection.”

Despite recent statistics that show progress in illegal gambling combat, the black market has the potential to attract gamblers without stricter regulations and deposit limits. Regulators need to enhance their monitoring efforts and improve support services, providing a safer gambling environment for everyone.
