KSA estimates miss as Netherlands channelization hits 87%

A new report from the Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) reveals that the gambling channelization in the Netherlands is 87%, significantly lower than the estimated 95%.

The KSA, or Kansspelautoriteit, is an independent regulatory body in the Netherlands that oversees and regulates gambling activities within the country.

On October 10, the KSA released two reports examining the gambling sector. The reports come from GfK and H2 Capital. GfK’s results indicate that 95% of players use only legal and licensed websites, whereas H2 Capital’s results show that the number is significantly lower, only 87%.

KSA chairman Michel Groothuizen commented:

“This means that those who play illegally often spend more money. This keeps the Netherlands attractive to illegal parties, an undesirable situation. The stricter we regulate, the greater that difference can become.”

According to Groothuizen, 95% came from the stricter bans on illegal operations, which motivated players to choose only legal operators.

Michel Groothuizen added:

“We can see the effects of policy in the figures and provide an interpretation of certain developments. We use data to keep our finger on the pulse when it comes to announced measures and the increase in gambling tax. I am curious to see what effects we will see in the next monitoring report in the spring.”

GGR in the Netherlands is already on the rise for 2024, with the first half of the year showing €752 million in total GGR. This is 8% more when compared to the same period in 2023.

KSA keeps monitoring the market. The next reports will be submitted in the spring.
