KSA flags tennis bets over match-fixing risk

Two betting operators stopped offering a specific tennis market to players after the Dutch gambling regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), flagged it as high-risk.

KSA said that the two betting operators, ZEbetting and Becta, offered bets on the win or loss of a set in tennis. The regulator thinks such markets can be “easily manipulated” and have been prohibited to prevent match-fixing and “protect the integrity of sports.” Both ZEbetting and Becta stopped offering to the market and have taken measures to prevent recurrence.

At the same time, KSA is stepping up its efforts to tackle advertising for online casinos not connected to the Netherlands’ national self-exclusion system in online magazines and news outlets.

KSA has previously begun contacting relevant media outlets with letters on how to avoid violations in the future. Still, the regulator receives “numerous reports of news articles enticing consumers to play at casinos that are not connected to Cruks.” Now, the focus on the promotional chain is intensified.

KSA said in the statement:

“This time, not only the media outlets publishing such content are being addressed; the KSA is also launching an investigation into the marketing agencies that offer these paid articles to various media channels. These agencies will be reported to the relevant regulatory bodies overseeing marketing and advertising activities, such as the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) and the Advertising Code Foundation (SRC).

In addition, the KSA will engage with industry associations for news publishers to inform them about what is and isn’t allowed.”

With this approach, KSA aims to raise awareness across the entire chain, ensuring that the promotion of illegal gambling ends quickly. If necessary, the regulator will take enforcement actions as well.
