LeoVegas sanctioned by Dutch Kansspelautoriteit
Casino operator LeoVegas has been fined €500,000 by the Dutch regulatory authority Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) after failing to comply with duty of care obligations.
The regulator revealed that violations of the duty of care were identified across all player files requested between October 2023 and May 2024.
The KSA mentioned various compliance issues, including inaction when a player deposited and lost thousands of euros in a short period of time. Additionally, the operator implemented ineffective intervention, as a player who showed serious signs of excessive gambling only received a pop-up warning, which could be easily dismissed.
Chair of KSA Michel Groothuizen stressed how operators have to do everything in their power to make sure that the duty of care is held to the highest standard.
Groothuizen said:
“The duty of care is an essential component of the broader spectrum of player protection. Providers must respond appropriately to excessive gambling. Significant losses in a short period of time are a key indicator of this. We have intensified our oversight of this duty of care and are taking a firm stance against gambling providers, as such a crucial element cannot be neglected.”
LeoVegas has expressed disagreement with the ruling and is planning to appeal the regulator’s decision.
