On May 20, Meta fired 8,000 employees, comprising 10% of the company’s global workforce, as part of a planned restructuring process that’s set to happen in three waves.

Employees from Meta’s integrity team, cybersecurity teams, and content design department were among those affected by the job cuts, with the first emails sent out to staff in Singapore as early as 4 am.

Initially, the company had announced plans to hire 6,000 workers in various positions, but the initiative was later replaced with the restructuring plan aimed at helping to fund investments into AI. Moreover, Meta announced that 7,000 of its staff would be moved into AI roles.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg commented:

“It’s always sad to say goodbye to people who have contributed to our mission and to building this company. I feel the weight of that, and I’m spending a lot of time making sure we manage this as well as possible. But success isn’t a given. AI is the most consequential technology of our lifetimes. The companies that lead the way will define the next generation.”

The company had revealed in April 2026 that it would spend $125-$145 billion on AI during the year, which is more than double the amount spent in 2025.

Meta had also rolled out an AI tracking program with the goal of training its own AI models based on employee data; however, over 1,500 staff members have already signed a petition to stop the company from collecting their information.
