MGM applied for Abu Dhabi casino license

MGM Resorts announced its submission for a United Arab Emirates casino license.

During Skift Global Forum 2024, MGM Resorts announced that the company applied for a casino license in the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi. MGM is one of only two companies to submit a bid, highlighting its plans to expand in this market.

Bill Hornbuckle, CEO at MGM Resorts, said:

“I hope and believe this year we’ll understand more about Abu Dhabi and the federal mandate.”

The unique structure of the UAE’s governance, where individual rulers can approve or reject casino operations, makes the market more interesting.

Bill Hornbuckle added:

“The way it will work is the federal government in Abu Dhabi will approve it; we’ve applied for it, and hopefully we’ll win the license there. Each ruler has their city, their state. Each can say yes or no.”

Back in 2017, MGM had already targeted the UAE, which aimed to develop a luxury resort in Dubai. This was to replicate MGM’s Las Vegas offering. There are potential podiums for casino gambling if regulations allow. As the company navigates this complex landscape, its future in the UAE remains to be seen.

UAE as a new target

With its unique blend of modernity and tradition, the UAE offers a promising landscape for gaming establishments looking to expand their reach.
Recently, Wynn Resorts has also targeted the UAE. Moreover, Wynn Resort’s debut may legalize casinos in the country.
