ESPN bet could be live in New York by the weekend
The New York State Gaming Commission has approved the transfer of Wynn Resorts‘ digital sports betting license to Penn Entertainment, bringing ESPN Bet‘s launch to the table.
After a long time, on Monday, September 23, the New York State Gaming Commission voted to transfer Wynn Resorts’ digital sports betting license to Penn Entertainment. ESPN Bet has been waiting for this approval since its launch through a partnership between Penn and ESPN in 2023, going live in 17 U.S. jurisdictions.
At the beginning of September, ESPN Bet was expected to have its debut in New York in a few weeks. However, later, it faced another delay.
With this approval, ESPN Bet is expected to be live in time for Week 4 of the NFL season. This week, all three New York teams are scheduled to play: the Dallas Cowboys face the New York Giants on Thursday night (September 26), the New York Jets host the Denver Broncos on Sunday (September 29), and the Buffalo Bills visit the Baltimore Ravens for the Sunday Night game.
Digital sports betting in New York
All major US operators are live in New York. Bally’s, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, Resorts World, and Rush Street Interactive. However, the market faced major changes. Fanatics Sportsbook purchased PointsBet’s North American assets in August 2023 and rebranded the New York platform in March.
WynnBet decided to exit the digital betting market and left the state in July. In February, Penn agreed to purchase WynnBet’s New York license for $25 million (£18.7 million/€22.5 million).
No compliance violations from ESPN
ESPN Bet might expand the New York market without targeting college-aged individuals or college campuses. WynnBet’s lack of operations in New York might make ESPN Bet attract new bettors rather than simply getting users from other platforms.
Chris Rogers, Executive Vice President at Penn Entertainment, said:
“We attract a different kind of bettor. So we would expect to grow the market. I think we’ve seen handle on those markets (we launch in) go up as people try a new platform. There are restrictions around college marketing, and our goal is to meet those standards.”
Penn and ESPN Bet will also not target the group under the age of 21. However, “general marketing” campaigns may not be completely banned for them.
