MGM Empire City Casino faces residents’ concerns

Although promising more than $41 million in annual tax revenue, $1 billion in economic activity, and thousands of high-paying jobs, the MGM Empire City Casino in Yonkers keeps facing concerns from residents.

Residents are concerned about traffic, safety issues, and the strain on neighborhood infrastructure. Most nearby homes are single- or two-family residences, and people fear the area isn’t built to handle the flow of visitors the casino would attract.

Tom Martin, a Yonkers resident, commented:

“The additional traffic, the additional people, the taxing on the resources, is going to affect my life.”

At a recent community forum, MGM presented updates on public safety, traffic studies, and stormwater management plans.

Taryn Duffy, vice president of Public Affairs for the casino, said:

“It’s really an exciting time to finally be able to develop this into its full potential. If we’re successful in getting the commercial casino license, we’ll be able to really develop this site and do a lot of improvements.”

MGM Resorts is committed to providing a luxury gaming experience for its guests, while not harming the area and locals. The Resorts estimates just five extra police calls per week, but locals suspect the number will be higher. Despite the casino’s assurances, many feel their concerns aren’t fully addressed.
