MGM Osaka set to begin construction in April 2025
MGM Resorts, partnering with Orix Corporation, will start the construction of the MGM Osaka project in April 2025.
Costing US$8 billion, MGM Osaka is going to be the first casino in Japan. It aims to transform Yumeshima Island into a massive resort. The island, which spans almost 1,000 acres, required significant land strengthening, including the installation of steel beams to reach bedrock. Earlier, the island faced setbacks, including failed Olympic bids and lack of commercial development.
According to the law of 2018, Japan restricts gaming to just 3% of the overall indoor area. However, MGM Osaka is expected to have more than 200 table games and 2,000 slot machines in 9 million square feet of indoor space, including a casino, hotels, restaurants, and more. Osaka government supported the idea of the resort and issued a gaming license back in April 2023.
MGM President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle said:
“Our vision is to bring MGM’s ‘wow’ DNA from Las Vegas to Osaka and build a resort that will be a source of great pride in the community.”
MGM Osaka is set to be a major economic and cultural hub, opening its doors in 2030.
