A Michigan court has granted a preliminary injunction against prediction market operator Kalshi, ordering the platform to shut down its sports event contracts for state users.
The order was signed on September 1, 2026, by Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina, building on the initial restrictions that were imposed on Kalshi back in June 2026. For context, the lawsuit had started in March 2026, when state officials, including Attorney General Dana Nessel, targeted the platform for offering illegal sports betting falsely presented as event contracts.
Attorney General Nessel commented:
“Kalshi long attempted to pass itself off as a legitimate gaming operation in our state, and I am relieved that this order further protects Michigan residents from its predatory, unlicensed practices.”
The first enforcement action against Kalshi required it to cease advertising sports betting products in Michigan, with the latest order extending the prohibitions. Additionally, the restrictions are expected to remain effective until a final judgment is issued.
Under the injunction, Kalshi is banned from offering, clearing, settling, or facilitating any contract that might be classified as online sports betting, and must block access to its platform for Michigan users. In case of violations of the geofencing orders, Kalshi will have to pay a $500,000 daily fine.
