NCAA bans ex-Iona player Adam Njie over point-shaving scheme
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has revealed that it has permanently banned Adam Njie Jr. after he was found to have been involved in a match-fixing betting scheme.
The NCAA announced on June 18 that Njie gave non-public information to sports bettors about games during his December 2024 season, telling them that he would underperform in the matches. However, according to Njie, he chose not to move forward with the plan, which led to the bettor losing $15,000 and threatening to harm the player.
The NCAA shared in a statement:
“Sports betting integrity violations occurred in the Iona men’s basketball program when former men’s basketball student-athlete Adam Njie Jr. provided game information to known bettors for sports betting reasons. The act of sharing information with a bettor is prohibited by NCAA legislation and is treated the same as point shaving from an NCAA enforcement perspective, regardless of whether the student-athlete goes through with throwing the game.”
Although the association doesn’t have the authority to enforce any legal punishment against athletes, it can still ban players. Additionally, banned players can get their eligibility back only in cases when an NCAA member school and the NCAA itself agree to it.
Regarding Njie’s case, the player assures he did not go through with the scheme, as NCAA statements additionally show that he cooperated with investigators and agreed to his violations.
