Netherlands receives criticism over gambling regulation
The Netherlands is in the midst of a large-scale debate about its gambling legislation.

State Secretary Struycken highlighted the importance of protection of young adults from gambling addiction, noting that existing regulations limit only 5% of players aged 18-24. While there was a report that 60% of ads were seen by young adults, Struycken disputed this, saying the actual number was 19.2%. Struyken suggests research to find connecting links between gambling, poverty, and suicide.
Struycken said:
“To what extent gambling addiction leads to an increase in poverty is not known to me, and this connection cannot be made easily.”
The Dutch parliament has been active in addressing these issues, including a recent offer by MP Michiel van Nispen, who suggested a total ban on online gambling ads.
