New stricter regulation combats illegal gambling in Macau

Macau’s Legislative Assembly approved the new stricter regulation aimed at combating illegal gambling operations.

The law called “Law to Combat Crimes of Illegal Gambling” was approved on October 16 with full support from all 32 legislators. Initially, the law was introduced in December 2023, and before being approved, it went through different stages of review.

Now, all illegal online gambling operations, unlicensed money exchanges, and any illegal activities in the market will be targeted as a result of the new law. Moreover, avoiding the “Law to Combat Crimes of Illegal Gambling” may result in harsher penalties and prison sentences of more than eight years.

Another important aspect of the law is the introduction of strict casino entry bans for individuals convicted of gambling-related crimes. The severity of the offense will determine the duration of the ban, which can vary from temporary to long-term exclusion. This includes offenses like motivating others into gambling, providing resources for illegal gambling, or engaging in fraudulent activities, such as counterfeiting gaming chips.

Macau hopes to keep its gaming sector’s reputation. Moreover, starting in January 2024, Macau blocked 36,000 illegal gambling websites in its territory. This new law is also a big step forward in Macau’s efforts to tighten control over its gaming sector, which is a crucial part of the country’s economy.
