Macau got rid of 36,000 illegal gambling sites in its territory since January 2024.

Macau is an autonomous region on the south coast of China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. It is the only jurisdiction in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) where casino gaming is lawful.

Macau’s Office of the Secretary for Security has advanced its collaboration with the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau to strengthen its ability in identifying and blocking illegal sites. Since 2022, local authorities, partnering with gambling operators, have been working hard to combat illegal online companies from establishing in Macau.

During 2024, Macau has blocked more than 36,000 illegal gambling websites to protect its local gaming industry from illegal and foreign competition. However, this sometimes is being misrepresented as affiliated with licensed operators.

Authorities have raised concerns that such false claims harm the industry’s reputation and put players at risk.

Over $120 million illegal profit in Macau

A recent operation called Break Peak found out over $120 of illegal profit. This means that some illegal gaming operators are very popular and profitable. In response to this and the growing threat of illegal online gambling, lawmakers have proposed stricter penalties. If avoided, organizers and promoters of illegal online gambling could face up to eight years in prison.

Illegal gambling sites are one of the ongoing issues in the iGaming industry. Many countries keep combating against them, including Denmark, with almost 162 blocked sites solely in 2024 and 438 in total since 2012.
