NHL and NFL unite against gambling ad restrictions in Canada

NHL and NFL have expressed their concerns about the proposed law to have restrictions on gambling advertisements in Canada.

Sports betting has gained popularity in North America and keeps attracting fans and casual bettors. A proposed law, Bill S-269, aims to have strict restrictions on gambling advertisements. After a recent meeting of the Senate’s Transport and Communications Committee, the bill moved closer to a full review.

There is a persistent challenge of illegal gambling across the country. Despite the growth of legal sports betting in the U.S., illegal operations continue to advance, often surpassing initial projections.

Jonathan Nabavi, vice president of public policy and government affairs at the NFL, wrote:

“The elimination of illegal gambling, especially offshore betting operators, requires not simply a legal alternative but robust, active monitoring and enforcement backed by significant civil and criminal penalties for violations.”

NHL and NFL raised their concerns as they think that advertising plays a crucial role in helping players make informed decisions about their betting options. Extra restrictions may limit public awareness of legal sportsbooks. Moreover, the competition between operators will become more tense.

Instead of restrictions, both the NHL and NFL suggest having a strong and strategic partnership with operators to together combat illegal gambling.
