North London’s Haringey council supports gambling ad ban

North London’s Haringey council becomes the first local authority in the UK to join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads (CEGA).
The council has already taken steps to restrict gambling ads on its platforms and is calling for stricter restrictions on gambling advertising, arguing that these ads fuel addiction. Moreover, almost 8,000 people in Haringey are battling gambling-related harms, with another 25,000 family, friends, and loved ones feeling the impact.
The financial asset is also concerning. Annually, £8 million ($9.9 million) is lost to cover gambling-related costs from homelessness, social care, and unpaid rent.
Haringey Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care & Wellbeing, Cllr Lucia das Neves, said:
“We are committed to protecting the well-being of our community, and we share the concerns of the Coalition to End Gambling Ads regarding the proliferation of gambling ads.”
Will Prochaska, Director of the Coalition to End Gambling Ads, said:
“Haringey’s stand as the first council in the country to join CEGA and call for an end to gambling ads nationally should be applauded. Councils do not have adequate powers to protect their citizens from the predatory gambling industry, but they do have a powerful voice nationally. It is important now that more councils follow Haringey’s lead.”
This support move aligns with the council’s ongoing efforts to combat gambling-related harm.
