Ontario proposes new bill to ban iGaming advertisements

Lawmakers in Ontario have introduced a new bill that aims to ban online sports betting ads on TV, social media, and sponsorships, stressing the declines in public health after the launch of the iGaming market in the province in 2022.

The bill was introduced on April 20, 2026, by Liberal MPP Lee Fairclough, as it proposes amending the Gaming Control Act. If passed, regulated operators and advertisers will be banned from promoting gambling to Ontario citizens.

In case of violations, operators could face fines of up to $1 million and even lose their iGaming license if the breaches are repeated.

Fairclough commented on the proposal:

“The bill is in response to the growing public health crisis associated with gambling addiction in the province that has exploded following the province’s 2022 decision to open the online gambling market to private operators. Since that time, there have been 50 private gambling companies advertising and promoting their sites across platforms. We’ve also seen a substantial increase in the number of people accessing health services through ConnexOntario for gambling problems.”

Ontario’s mental health and addictions helpline saw a 144% jump in calls after the introduction of iGaming, with 76% of all gambling questions being about online gambling specifically.

Despite the proposal, the Liberals aren’t part of the government currently, so getting legislation passed would be quite a difficult task.
