Ontario regulator fines FanDuel $350K for integrity risks

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has imposed a $350,000 penalty on FanDuel Canada after it was revealed that the operator didn’t properly identify, address, and report suspicious betting activity.

The review covered the period from October 23, 2024, to November 30, 2024, regarding bets on matches in the Czech Table Tennis Star Series, an event already flagged in the industry for integrity concerns. During this time, FanDuel accepted 144 bets from three Ontario player accounts regarding the table tennis event.

The AGCO stated that there were various warning signs, including betting behavior changes and repeated bets on two specific athletes. Many of the bets were placed on athletes who were expected to lose but received almost perfect success rates and synchronized bets on all three accounts.

Ontario’s iGaming law requires operators to be first in line to fight against betting match manipulation. Once an operator identifies suspicious activity, it must immediately be reported to independent integrity monitors, which then share the information with other licensed operators and sports authorities.

FanDuel has the right to appeal the fine within 15 days to the License Appeal Tribunal.

The AGCO stressed it will continue to monitor licensed operators in order to ensure compliance with Ontario’s regulated betting framework.
