Ontario reveals new gambling self-exclusion system BetGuard
Ontario has revealed the province’s new centralized self-exclusion system called BetGuard, which will apply to the entire regulated market and will launch in May 2026.
The new system was presented on April 15, 2026, during the Responsible Gambling Council Discovery conference by the president and CEO of iGaming Ontario, Joseph Hillier.
The platform was created in collaboration with Integrity Compliance 360 and Dataworks, as it is set to allow local players to self-exclude from iGaming services through a simple and intuitive process, where the players will be in control. BetGuard will let players self-exclude from all 82 licensed operators with just one request, with previous models requiring users to self-exclude for each website separately.
Exclusion periods of up to 5 years will be offered, with the framework banning operators from sending gaming ads or letting self-excluded players create new accounts.
Despite the launch of the centralized system, iGaming operators will still have to run their own exclusion tools as well. The new platform will use KYC checks in order to confirm the player’s identity, with the data being sent through encrypted channels between the system and the operators.
CEO Joseph Hillier commented that the goal of BetGuard is to give players access to safer gaming tools and make self-exclusion faster and more streamlined.
