Ontario sets new iGaming handle record in August
Ontario’s online gambling market hit a new milestone in August, setting records for player spending.
Operators reported a combined handle of CA$8.14 billion across online casinos and betting platforms: the highest to date and only the second time monthly spending has passed the CA$8 billion mark, after May’s CA$8.07 billion.
Online casino and betting handle climbed 8% in August, reaching $8.16 billion compared to $7.56 billion in July. Revenue followed the same trajectory, also rising 8% month-on-month to $336 million from $311 million.
On a yearly basis, the market showed steady growth, with handle up from $6.05 billion in August 2024 and revenue improving from $238.3m.
After three months of declines, active player accounts finally rebounded, growing 7%t to 1.01 million. Average revenue per user reached $330, just shy of the August 2024 record of $332 and a 1% improvement on July’s $328.
Breaking it down by vertical, online casino continued to dominate in August, generating $7.2 billion in handle(89% of the total), up 7% from July. Casino revenue climbed 6% to $267.8 million, representing 80% of the market.
Sports betting also had solid growth, with handle rising 11% to $765 million, accounting for 9% of overall activity. Betting revenue reached $60.2 million, up 14% month-on-month, and made up 18% of the market.
