Philippine congressman proposes PAGCOR dissolution

A Philippine congressman is advocating for the dissolution of PAGCOR and the establishment of PAGCOM as a new organization in its stead.

Representative Jonathan Keith Flores of the 2nd District of Bukidnon, who chairs the House Committee on Government Reorganization, made a proposal on Saturday to privatize the self-operated casinos in the district and dissolve the state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.

Flores’s proposal seeks to establish a Philippine Amusement and Gaming Commission in its place, which would oversee gambling activities throughout the country. In a press release on Saturday, Flores declared that he had taken House Bill 3559, which was first written by Ralph Recto, the current finance secretary and former legislator from Batangas, and made it his own. The measure aims to privatize state-run casinos in order to deal with Pagcor’s dual duties as operator and regulator.

Flores stated:

“I adopted House Bill 3559 because it will abolish Pagcor, transfer its regulatory powers to Pagcom and privatise all existing Pagcor operations and casinos, including all Pagcor online gaming.”
