Portugal records iGaming decline for the first time in years
For the first time in almost three years, Portugal’s iGaming market has recorded a decline of 12%, totalling the revenue to €284.7 million.
When compared to the end of 2024, this is a 12% decline; however, when compared to the same period of 2024, the numbers remain up by more than 9%.
Online casino games claim the crown with €169.7 million (8% lower than the previous quarter), mainly driven by slot machines. Sports betting saw a decline of nearly 17%, bringing in €114.9 million. Football remains the top sport for betting, making up more than 70% of all bets. Both sports betting and online casino games showed solid year-on-year growth.
Player activity is still going strong. There were 4.8 million active accounts, a 7% increase, despite the decline in new registrations. Around 1.2 million users placed bets in the first quarter, 43% of whom used both casinos and sports betting platforms.
When it comes to responsible gambling, more than 39,000 accounts used the self-exclusion tool and opted out, recording a 31% increase compared to 2024.
The government collected €82.7 million in gambling taxes and continues to get rid of illegal operators, blocking more than 100 sites in the last quarter alone.
