Serbia’s ZLF calls on a complete ban on gambling ads

Serbia’s ZLF, a progressive political alliance focused on environmentalism, social justice, and human rights, proposes a complete ban on gambling advertisements to protect the nation from the risks and harms of gambling.

ZLF representatives argue that gambling ads significantly harm young groups and vulnerable individuals. Moreover, they claim that, based on various research studies, the government failed to manage the industry and effectively address the issues. Despite the ban on advertisements featuring celebrities, under current laws, everyone can create a betting product.

Biljana Đorđević, a ZLF representative in Serbia’s National Assembly, highlighted that the proposal was submitted back in March. However, the government has yet to respond or engage in meaningful discussions. She also pointed to Minister of Trade Tomislav Momirović’s reluctance to tackle the issue, noting his suggestion to limit billboard ads on busy roads.

Marina Mijatović, another ZLF representative, noted that such advertisements glamorize betting, especially when they include celebrities, and normalizing gambling for young audiences can be very harmful to the future of the country. For ZLF, a total ad ban is the only way to prioritize public health over gambling profits.
