SkyCity Entertainment Group is closing down its casino in Auckland for five days following a five-year host duty violation prosecution by Internal Affairs.
SkyCity Entertainment Group Ltd announced the news today:
“The dates of closure are not yet confirmed. The five-day closure comes after the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) made an application to the New Zealand Gambling Commission to suspend SkyCity Casino Management Ltd’s New Zealand casino operator’s licence based on identified failings of the Auckland Host Responsibility Programme. The DIA has now applied to the Gambling Commission to withdraw that application, with the agreement being conditional on this approval.”
SkyCity chair Julian Cook listed the company’s actions as including the hiring of a chief risk officer, improving training, and adding additional personnel to the risk and host responsibility teams, among other things.
Cook said:
“The SkyCity Board, executive and entire team are wholly committed to doing better, and building back trust. We have the plans, people and necessary investment to do this, but we know we have work to do.”
The company announced that it reached an agreement with the internal affairs’ secretary to solve a request that can make it stop working for some time.
The closure will cost about one million dollars per day. It will be the initial voluntary shut down of a New Zealand casino. The company said that it had agreed with the Secretary of Internal Affairs on settling an application where it had applied for temporary suspension of its casino operating license.
According to a statement from DIA, the investigation was initiated after receiving a complaint from a customer.
