South Africa sees record GGR rise in 2023-24

In the period of 2023-24, GGR in South Africa hit a record ZAR59.3bn, which is equal to $3.37bn.

South Africa has a varied gambling market. Despite being legal only in a few provinces, including the Northern Cape and Western Cape, sports betting continues to dominate the market, generating  ZAR35.91 billion, which is 60.5% of total gambling revenue. This is an increase of 51.2% when compared to the previous year.

While sports betting thrives, other gambling segments have not seen the same growth. Casino revenue remained stable at ZAR17.36 billion, which is more than only 0.1% when compared to the last year.

The total amount wagered across all forms of gambling reached a record ZAR1.14 trillion, surpassing last year’s figure by 40.2%. Sports betting alone accounted for ZAR761.26 billion, or 66.6% of total wagers. The Western Cape led the way in gambling revenue, earning ZAR18.79 billion, benefiting significantly from its legal online betting options. Another region, which is the most famous and populated region of South Africa, Gauteng, comes next with ZAR13.10bn in total revenue from ZAR173.7bn in bets.

If simpler, sports betting has not only reshaped the gambling market but also generated ZAR4.84 billion in tax revenue for the country, contributing ZAR2.41 billion of that amount.
