Spain fines 15 gambling operators for $69M
Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda has taken strict action against illegal gambling practices, issuing fines totaling €65.3 million ($69 million) to 15 online gambling operators in the first half of 2024.
Since the debut of the updates to Spain’s gambling laws, which mandate public disclosure of serious violations, DGOJ, Spain’s gambling regulator, has sanctioned 154 operators, imposing fines totaling €398 million ($420.2 million).
In H1 2024, DGOJ fined 15 operators, 13 of which were fined because of unlicensed operations. Among the fined companies were Interactive Pro, Stars Cream, and Goldenpharaoh. Each of these operators faced fines of €5 million ($5.3 million); moreover, some also received a two-year suspension. DGOJ monitors the market and fines not only unlicensed operators but also those who are licensed but violate some regulations. Two licensed operators, Codere and Electraworks, were fined smaller amounts (€325,000 or $343,150) for other regulatory violations.
Spain’s efforts against illegal gambling
With this move, Spain aims to highlight its dedication to safer gambling practices within the country. Moreover, this serves as a warning to other operators to work in compliance with the country’s laws. In unrelated news, Spain also saw justice served in a long-standing lottery swindle case involving bar owners attempting to defraud a $16 million winner, highlighting the country’s broader commitment to upholding fairness.
