Spillemyndigheden urges licensees to assess player ID impact

The Spillemyndigheden has recently called for its licensed operators to assess the effectiveness of the newly implemented player identification mandate.

The new player identification verification mandate, which applies to land-based gambling operators throughout Denmark, went into effect at the start of the month. The new requirement mandated retail gambling operators to verify the identities of their players before accepting wagers from them, which gambling firms can accomplish through either physical or digital means. This ID would then be linked to a gambling account, through which players could access their winnings.

Following the implementation of the new requirement, the Danish gambling regulator, the Spillemyndigheden, has recently published an announcement urging licensed operators to carry out risk assessments to find out what effect the new player identification measures are having on their businesses. Specifically, the regulatory authority aims to find out if the new mandate has had an impact on the inherent risk of a gambling business being used for various financial crimes, such as money laundering.

The regulator also called for its licensees to assess how the new player identification mandate, along with their implementations of the requirement, can be utilized by a variety of malevolent parties. Spillemyndigheden mentioned that operators should look into ways to enhance their player ID solutions as well to further reduce their susceptibility to various financial crimes.
