Sweden implements stricter gambling regulations
The Swedish government has officially approved the Macolin Convention, a global agreement aimed at tackling match-fixing in sports and strengthening its regulated gambling market.
Government officials see this as a win for Sweden’s gambling market. By ratifying the Macolin Convention, Sweden increases consumer trust and takes a firm stand against illegal betting practices. The Swedish Trade Association for Online Gambling (BOS) had previously called for stricter measures to protect the industry.
Introduced in 2014, the Macolin Convention is the only international legal framework designed to prevent match manipulation. However, there are also some concerns about this theme. BOS believes private gambling companies that control a large share of the market shouldn’t be limited to state-run operators.
By joining the Macolin Convention, Sweden is taking a bold stand against match-fixing, aligning itself with global efforts to protect the integrity of sports competitions. Sweden becomes the 10th EU nation, including Spain, Italy, and France, as well as countries like Australia and Morocco, which are committed to fair play and market integrity.
