Sweden reports public confusion over gambling websites

Spelinspektionen reports concerning news, mentioning that 72% of Swedish gamblers do not differentiate between legal and illegal gambling websites.
Despite Sweden’s continued efforts to have a 90% usage of legal gambling websites, the country still stands at 69–82%. According to the survey by Spelinspektionen, young adults aged 18–19 were least likely to check if a site was licensed. On the other hand, more than half of the people aged 65 and older preferred legal operators despite the confusion around the market.
When it comes to reasons for avoiding legal websites, concerns about payment issues, personal data safety, and the risk of addiction are the top factors. Still, 8% admitted using unlicensed platforms to avoid taxes.
Most Swedes now prefer iGaming to traditional gambling practices. In early April, Sweden announced it would become an iGaming-exclusive market by 2027.
Gustaf Hoffstedt, from the gambling trade group BOS, urged the government to do more to support legal gambling companies and help them stand out. This can result in a complete reshaping of the gambling market.
