Swedish regulator appoints Johan Röhr as acting director general
Johan Röhr, who currently serves as chief legal officer at the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA), has been named acting director general of the regulator.
Röhr has been working at Spelinspektionen since 2008 as legal counsel, following several years in the judiciary, including at the Stockholm Court of Appeal. He will be stepping into the new position on 1 November and will hold it until a permanent replacement is appointed.
Röhr follows Camilla Rosenberg, who will depart from the authority on 31 October, having served as director since 2017, and will take the next step in her career as director and head of the Swedish Real Estate Agents’ Inspection Authority.
She led a number of fundamental changes to the gambling framework and introduced licensing conditions with enforcement against unlicensed operators while in charge.
The transition in leadership happens as the Swedish Gambling Authority is conducting a consultation on proposed rule changes, that Röhr is to oversee in an interim capacity. One of the measures would require operators to use more precise credentials, such as Actor IDs and API keys, when registering new players, in order to improve checks against Spelpaus, the national self-exclusion system, as well as consumer protection.
With Röhr acting as the director general, the regulator is expected to maintain its attention on tightening oversight and addressing ongoing challenges from unlicensed operators and changing market demands.
