Thai Prime Minister brings KYC and AML checks to casino plan

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra revealed that the government might require foreign visitors to undergo criminal background and financial checks before entering casinos.
Known as KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) checks, these checks are common in the financial world. However, according to critics, bringing these checks to the casino world may discourage tourists, especially those who don’t want to share private financial information just for playing poker or trying their luck.
Despite this, the Thai Prime Minister is standing firm. She insists that the country should avoid money laundering and organized crime risks.
Paetongtarn Shinawatra stated:
“Entertainment complexes will not lead Thailand to its worst vices. Developed countries like Singapore, the US, Japan, and the UAE follow this global trend. They know that sand, sun, and sea are not enough any longer. There must be manmade. We don’t want Thailand to miss the trend.”
Casino complexes in Thailand
Thailand announced its interest in the world of casinos back in September 2024 with the introduction of the Thai casino bill. Aimed to legalize casinos within large entertainment complexes, the bill keeps facing serious pushback from both the public and administrative segments. Recently, a study conducted between April 21 and 23 by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) found that most Thais are feeling pretty unenthusiastic and even divided about the government’s plan. For now, Thailand’s casino future remains unknown.
