Tony Evers approves bill to legalize online sports betting
Tony Evers, the Governor of Wisconsin, has signed legislation to legalize online sports betting, making Wisconsin the 33rd U.S. state to allow online bets.
Evers signed the bill on April 9, 2026; however, it’s expected to take months before the state negotiates a deal with American Indian tribes that are supposed to run sports betting in the state.
The Governor commented:
“Each of the 11 Tribes must now work diligently, and together, to shape the future of sports betting in Wisconsin. … An approach that exacerbates long-standing inequalities among Tribal Nations is not good for Wisconsinites or Wisconsin. I will not entertain it as governor.”
While gambling is legal in Wisconsin on tribal lands, online sports betting has always been illegal in the state, but the new law will allow sports bets only if the computer servers that manage the bets are located on tribal lands, which is known as the “hub-and-spoke” approach used in Florida.
The legislation, called Assembly Bill 601, passed with bipartisan support, but it has faced some criticism from the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA), with operators like FanDuel and DraftKings stressing that they would lose around 60% of revenue to partner tribes if the law is introduced.
