UFT stands against Caesar’s NY casino project
One of New York’s most influential unions, the United Federation of Teachers, has announced its opposition to Caesars Entertainment‘s NY casino project.
According to the union, opening a casino project in the heart of Broadway will harm the cultural market of the district, which is an irreplaceable cultural and educational asset. Michael Mulgrew, UFT’s president, shared personal stories of accompanying students on theatre trips, highlighting the strong impact of such activities.
The UFT is not the only union that stands against the project. “No Times Square Coalition,” a growing group with more than 30 other organizations and led by The Broadway League, argues that Broadway is already a major tourism driver and there is no need to have a casino to thrive. It is important to note that the opposition is not against the idea of having a casino in NY. It is against the location.
Caesar’s reply to its NY casino opposition
Despite different challenges and opposition, Caesars is sure that the proposed casino project will not bring any harm to Times Square. Instead, it will create millions in Broadway ticket donations for students and funding for educational initiatives. Earlier this year, the Caesars New York Casino team promised major investments. With New York set to award three casino licenses next year, the debate continues to thrive.
