UK to launch review of illegal operators’ sports sponsorships

According to reports from the Guardian, the UK government is in the process of launching a review into sponsorships of British sports teams by unlicensed gambling operators after the initial consultation scheduled for spring 2026 was delayed.

It’s believed that the trigger for restarting the crackdown on illegal gambling sponsorships of sports teams came after Stake extended its partnership with Everton FC in early July 2026, which is supposed to place Stake’s logo on Everton’s players’ shirt sleeves. The new agreement was signed for a 3-year period, amending the previous sponsorship that displayed Stake’s logo on the front of the shirts.

In February 2026, the UK’s Department for Culture, Media, and Sport shared plans to start a formal review into gambling sponsorships, but the action never happened, allowing operators to sign further deals with sports teams. The Guardian has alleged that the postponed consultation is now expected to take place sometime in the coming week.

Industry representatives had also warned of the dangers of allowing unlicensed operators to become sponsors of UK sports teams, with Entain CEO Stella David urging the government to speed up enforcement action.

Previously, Stake held a license in the UK granted by the Gambling Commission; however, the company chose to surrender its registration in March 2025 after going through a regulatory review, which identified violations in its operations.
