UKGC intensifies its efforts against black market

The UK Gambling Commission, UKGC, shared its new, intensified strategy aimed at combating the illegal black market in the UK.

Addressing the black market is the top priority for the UKGC, and the regulator is committed to protecting society from the dangers that come together with the black market.

The Gambling Commission CEO, Andres Rhodes, commented:

“The illegal market is bad from a human point of view, as it poses a risk to consumers, especially the vulnerable. It is also unlikely to operate in a way that is fair or safe. It is also a concern from an economic point of view, as it pays no tax and undercuts legitimate business.”

With the use of data analytics, strong partnerships, and different research, UKGC is creating a new strategy to shut down all illegal sites.

Rhodes added:

“Increased use of data analytics is at the heart of our corporate strategy. We are building our capacity to use data to make regulation more effective, and we are already deploying this in our work to tackle unlicensed gambling.”

Consumer Voice program

With its new strategy and a “Consumer Voice” program, UKGC aims to find the motivation of consumers who prefer the black market to the licensed market.

Rhodes said:

“Additional efforts will include test purchasing activities and ongoing contact with payment providers to detect and prevent illegal transactions. The Commission will also continue to engage with external partners, such as law enforcement agencies, the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit, and HMRC, to strengthen its efforts.”

Moreover, the commission is considering expanding its partnerships with Google and Microsoft to replicate effective URL referral processes.
