Unibet wins Dutch court case over player data requests
A Dutch court has ruled in favor of Unibet in a case over player data requests, dismissing claims from Dutch players who used Unibet between 2010 and 2024 and wanted to know what personal data the company had collected.
Unibet faced this legal scandal in the Netherlands back in January 2025. Gokverliesterug, which helps players take legal action against gambling operators, said Unibet failed to fully provide the requested data. While two players received some information in late 2023 and early 2024, including transaction and game histories, the group said Unibet refused to share more.
As a response, Unibet asked for more time and requested that players submit their requests differently. Moreover, Unibet claimed that Gokverliesterug had no right to represent the players in court. Under GDPR, only a non-profit organization can act on behalf of individuals in data-related claims. However, Gokverliesterug takes a 36% cut of any recovered money, which shows that it’s a profit-driven company.
Gokverliesterug denied acting for profit and said it used outside funding to cover legal risks. Finally, the court ruled that it failed to prove it operated without financial motives and didn’t meet the requirements of GDPR Article 79. As a result, the court ordered Gokverliesterug to pay €2,553 in legal costs to Unibet and its legal partner Risepoint and didn’t allow the case to proceed further.
