AGA announced its support for leading US operators
After a British study that insists on the US leading operator’s failure to work in compliance with the rules, the American Gaming Association (AGA) announced its support for the operators.
The University of Bristol, a red-brick Russell Group research university located in Bristol, conducted a study and claims that four major U.S. sportsbooks, BetMGM, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, and FanDuel, did not include problem gambling messages in 74.8% of their non-sponsored social media posts posted during this summer. After reviewing almost 1,353 posts on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, the study insists that social media posts from all 4 sportsbooks may violate the AGA’s marketing code that highlights the importance of the promotion of responsible gambling.
The American Gaming Association (AGA) responded to the university by saying that the main message of the posts was brand awareness and not encouraging people to bet.
AGA senior vice president Joe Maloney said:
“Like companies across other industries, sports betting operators provide relevant, engaging content to customers designed to maintain brand awareness without promoting a specific offering that is covered by the code, like sports betting. To describe the sharing of sports facts, schedules, or discussion topics via tweets and posts on social media platforms as advertising and thus applicable to our code is an irresponsible misinterpretation.”
Maloney thinks that the US industry works in compliance with the laws and that there were no violations from its four major operators.
He added:
“We’re proud of our members’ responsible advertising practices and their commitment to upholding strong industry standards, which continues to grow consumer trust in our industry’s overall commitment to responsibility. The industry should have space for a nuanced discussion about what constitutes advertising, but studies like this oversimplify the issue and misinform the public. According to Maloney, such reports prevent meaningful dialogue and create a narrative that doesn’t reflect the industry’s actual efforts.
