BAGO Insists On Stronger Gambling Regulation in Belgium

The latest research by the Belgian Association of Gaming Operators (BAGO) revealed the need for stronger gambling policy measures in the country.
BAGO found out that 3 /10 most popular iGaming sites among players aged 18-30 are unlicensed. Over 84% play via licensed operators, but 28% of them also use illegal sites.
Tom de Clercq, Chairman of BAGO, said:
“We are seriously concerned about the growing presence of illegal platforms and their appeal to young people. We now know that around one in four Belgian players already participate in illegal, unlicensed gambling. A significant portion of the market is thus in the hands of websites that escape all forms of regulation. No control, no protection, and no social responsibility. Knowledge is power, and research like this from the Gaming Commission is crucial to protect players more effectively.”
BAGO is also concerned about finding out that 22% of research participants choose gambling operators from social media ads that give players false expectations. He calls for policy measures to strengthen the Gaming Commission for faster detection and enforcement.
Clercq added:
“What stands out is that young people often end up on illegal gambling websites via aggressive social media ad campaigns filled with unlawful promises. The Commission’s research shows that social media campaigns attract one in three young people aged 18 to 30 – something not permitted for licensed Belgian gaming operators.”
BAGO wants the Commission to work with financial institutions to investigate payment blocks on illegal sites, and it wants the Commission to “build a broad alliance with government, the sector and healthcare professionals to better protect players.”
