Boyd, Wynn and Caesars casinos urged to go smoke-free

The American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation (ANRF), together with Trinity Health, has submitted shareholder proposals to Boyd Gaming, Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Penn Entertainment asking for a formal study on the financial pros and cons of eliminating indoor smoking in casinos.

Boyd and Wynn’s boards are strongly opposing the inquiry, advising shareholders to vote “no” ahead of their annual meetings on April 30 and May 8. It’s not the first time this issue has come up. Last year, despite getting more than 60 million votes in support, the suggestion did not pass.

Cynthia Hallett, President and CEO of ANRF, said:

“There are clear business risks to allowing indoor smoking in casinos, including higher health insurance premiums, higher maintenance costs, and a significant deterrent to potential visitors due to secondhand smoke exposure.”

However, casino executives do not desire to go for the smoking ban, thinking that it could hurt business, especially in those states where nearby competitors still allow smoking.

Right now, 11 of the 27 states with commercial casinos have gone fully smoke-free, including famous names like New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland.
