Brazil considers nationwide ban on betting ads

On Wednesday, March 12, Brazil’s Sports Commission (CEsp) will discuss a bill that could ban all fixed-odds betting ads nationwide.
Introduced by Senator Styvenson Valentim, the bill to amend existing gambling regulations by prohibiting betting advertisements across all media platforms. According to Valentim, gambling companies are ignoring marketing restrictions, especially those that are for protecting younger age groups.
Styvenson Valentim said:
“This proposal is justified in view of the sudden change in the profile of bettors, which is now mostly made up of young people, who have at their disposal, 24 hours a day, with just one click, the possibility of placing bets without any barrier to impulsive behaviour.”
Senator Carlos Portinho, who previously tried to limit online gambling in Brazil, supports this idea. Moreover, he suggests additional restrictions such as a ban on betting ads on the radio between 10 PM and 6 AM,
Portinho commented:
“The rampant advertising in this sector leads the audience to believe that, with a stroke of luck, they will achieve financial independence, when reality has shown the even more pronounced impoverishment of the most economically vulnerable segments of the population.”
If approved by CEsp, the bill will move to the Communication and Digital Law Commission (CCDD) for further evaluation.
