Brazil to ban betting bonuses and advertisements
Ahead of the regulated market’s debut in January 2025, on November 19, the Brazilian government called for a complete ban on all betting bonuses and advertisements.
The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) has now targeted the marketing techniques that motivate and encourage excessive gambling. Specifically, the new rules ban the use of betting bonuses in promotions and ban advertisements targeting minors.
This decision comes after the reports that claim that a significant portion of funds from Brazil’s Bolsa Família social welfare program were being used for online gambling. In fact, in August, 20% of these payments were spent on betting, with some individuals even prioritizing gambling over essentials like food and medicine.
Strict penalties for Brazilian operators
All those operators who fail to follow the new rule may receive daily fines of R$50,000, which equals $8,671. Moreover, all companies need to submit detailed reports on the use of the new measures ten days after the order passes.
Brazil’s iGaming Market in 2025
The SPA, the government’s Secretariat of Prizes and Bets, is focused on safeguarding players in the regulated market, enforcing marketing restrictions, and ensuring operators meet safety standards. With the new regulations starting in 2025, strict anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorism financing (CTF), and strong IT security measures will be enforced to prevent excessive gambling. Moreover, credit card betting will also be banned in Brazil.
