The Canadian Gaming Association (CGA), in collaboration with Ad Standards, has released a new Code for Responsible Gaming Advertising to establish clear principles for consumer protection.
Ad Standards will be responsible for administering the new principles. The code will apply to CGA members and include all gambling ads, as well as all media formats such as digital, social, broadcast, print, and out-of-home advertising.
Amanda Brewer, Senior Vice President of Policy and Communications at the CGA, said:
“Compliance with the CGA Code and applicable standards aims to ensure transparency and integrity for Canadians while maintaining clarity and adherence within the gaming industry. By establishing guiding principles for operators, the Code also serves as a benchmark for acceptable and socially responsible advertising practices across the Canadian gaming sector. This represents an instance of a national industry initiative that warrants careful consideration by those advocating for advertising bans or mistakenly believing that no regulatory framework is in place.”
Brewer was referring to Bill S-211, an act that aims to create a national framework on sports betting advertising sponsored by Senator Marty Deacon. The legislation will not fully ban gambling advertising; however, it will target jurisdictions that encourage players to place bets with illegal operators and don’t follow the Ontario-regulated model.
