Colorado voters pass sports betting tax redirection bill

Colorado, a western U.S. state, reported the passing of Proposition JJ with 79% of voters’ approval to redirect all tax revenue from sports betting to essential water projects.

Since sports betting’s legalization in 2019, sports betting taxes in Colorado generated almost $80 million. Now, with Proposition JJ, every dollar collected from sports betting taxes will fund water-related projects, such as enhancing water storage, protecting fish habitats, and supporting water conservation.

Proposition JJ passed with more than 2 million votes, which is 79% of the state voters. However, 668,577 people showed their disapproval of the bill. The passing comes at a critical time as the Colorado Water Conservation Board estimates a $1.5 billion gap in funding for future water needs over the next 30 years.

State Senator Dylan Roberts, co-sponsor of the bill, praised voters for their commitment to Colorado’s water security. Major water providers, including Denver Water and the Colorado River Water Conservation District, have expressed strong support, noting the potential for urgent projects to finally move forward.

In regions like southwestern Colorado and the Arkansas River Basin, leaders think this funding could help tackle substantial projects like the Arkansas Valley Conduit, a $1.4 billion initiative to bring drinking water to communities.
