Denmark reports $84.1m GGR driven by online gambling operators

For August 2024, Spillemyndigheden reported a 4.3% gross gaming revenue increase in Denmark.
Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and numerous islands. Gambling in Denmark is legal and is regulated by the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden.
According to Spillemyndigheden’s reports, gross gaming revenue for August 2024, which is DKK571 million and equals $84.1 million, is higher not only when compared to the same period of the last year but also when compared to July 2024.
These numbers are driven by online casinos and are close to the breaking reports from March 2024, which were DKK309 million. Recently, Spillemyndigheden has blocked 79 illegal gambling sites in Denmark. In fact, this means that the reported revenues come from companies that work in compliance with the regulations.
Declines in the Danish gambling market
Despite the significant rise in the online gambling segment, other segments of the Danish gambling market saw declines. Sports betting revenue fell 14% year-on-year to DKK147 million, down 1.3% from July. Land-based casinos, specifically slot machine revenue, decreased by 0.2% to DKK96 million.
Moreover, Spillemyndigheden released data for the ROFUS self-exclusion program, showing that by the end of August, 51,893 people had signed up, marking a 12.4% increase compared to the last year. Most of these users, almost 77.3%, are male, and 66.6% chose permanent exclusion. Meanwhile, 37% of the nearly 3,200 inquiries to the StopSpillet support service since its 2019 launch came from individuals aged 18–25, making them the largest age group seeking help.
